Profile

Dr. Joy MacDermid is a physical therapist, hand therapist, epidemiologist and holds a CIHR New Investigator Award. She is a Professor at Western University’s School of Physical Therapy and McMaster University’s School of Rehabilitation Science. She is also cross-appointed to the Departments of Surgery and Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics at both Western and McMaster University. Joy is the Co-director of the Clinical Research Lab within the Hand and Upper Limb Centre (HULC) in London, Ontario. Her research projects address clinical questions related to enhancing prevention, assessment and management of musculoskeletal disorders and related work disability. Specific research interests include: understanding factors that contribute to upper extremity disability surgery and rehabilitation intervention effectiveness, randomized clinical trials/trial methodology, cohort outcomes studies, psychometrics of clinical measurement (performance or self-report, measures of pain/disability/quality-of-life), clinical epidemiology, clinical practice guidelines, and knowledge transfer. Courses developed and taught include upper extremity clinical skills research and evidence-based practice, quality-of-life (measurement/research), knowledge exchange, and transfer.
